A Salute Beyond the Parade Ground: Celebrating the First Women Cadets Passing Out from NDA

As an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA), my heart swells with pride witnessing a historic moment – the first-ever batch of women cadets passing out from my alma mater. The drill square, once an exclusive male bastion, has now echoed with the synchronized footsteps of women breaking barriers. And for me, this isn’t just about symbolism – it’s deeply personal. One of the cadets among this pioneering group happens to be the daughter of a coursemate. Our shared pride as parents, comrades, and citizens is immeasurable.

From gruelling obstacle courses and relentless physical endurance drills, to mastering tactics and excelling in academics, the women of NDA’s first graduating batch have matched – and often surpassed – expectations. They stood shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts, earning respect not through exception, but through excellence.

Many of them ranked among the top in their courses. Several were awarded distinctions in endurance, leadership, and overall performance. But perhaps the most powerful achievement is this: they have made courage contagious. For young girls across India, especially in small towns and lesser-known schools, these cadets are no longer distant dreams – they are living proof that the uniform fits just as well on a determined woman.

The resolve of these women cadets is nothing short of extraordinary.

Inspire to Aspire

But beneath the uniform, beyond the ceremonial sword & batons, lies a powerful paradox.

These young women, now ready to serve in one of the world’s most demanding institutions, still face expectations tied not just to duty and discipline – but to tradition, biology, and deeply entrenched social roles. The contrast is as stark as it is real: the battlefield of gender bias does not end at the academy gates.

While women officers have increasingly made their mark across branches of the Indian Armed Forces – from flying fighter jets to commanding units and navigating ships – the road hasn’t been easy. The journey has been shaped by grit, legal battles, landmark judgements, and a quiet resolve to prove their mettle every day. And even today, their career pathways are often challenged by legacy mindsets and systemic limitations.

📌 According to India’s Time Use Survey Report (2021), women spend an average of 299 minutes daily on unpaid domestic services, compared to 97 minutes by men.
📌 As this Mint article insightfully points out, even educated, urban women continue to shoulder double shifts — excelling at work while bearing the weight of household responsibilities.
📌 These aren’t just statistics. They’re lived realities. They’re silent compromises.

They’re the reasons many high-potential women exit the career race before they’ve truly begun to run.

At ProventusHR, through our flagship Inspire to Aspire initiative, we work relentlessly to challenge and change this narrative.

Inspire2Aspire isn’t a training program — it’s a movement.

It’s a carefully designed capability journey that helps women:

  • Anchor their self-concept with clarity and courage
  • Navigate social conditioning with awareness and authenticity
  • Build leadership identity that’s not borrowed, but self-authored
  • Translate intent into influence – turning stakeholders into cheerleaders
  • Create impact with empathy, not by mirroring traditional leadership stereotypes
  • Cultivate inner resilience to manage both systemic and subconscious bias

And just as important – Inspire2Aspire invites organizations, leaders, and male allies to engage meaningfully in this journey. Because sustainable gender equity isn’t a “women’s issue.” It’s a leadership imperative.

To the first batch of NDA women cadetsyou’re not just carrying forward a legacy; you’re rewriting it.
To every woman rising against the grain in corporate, civil, or commissioned service – we salute you.
To leaders wondering how to make a difference, not just a statement – we invite you to co-create that change with us.

Let’s not stop at celebrating milestones. Let’s build mechanisms.
